Seine 4 bis 10 cm langen Bltter sind nach dem Austrieb klebrig, aber nicht behaart. Nach dem Laubfall im Herbst gilt das Laub der Schwarz Erle als schnell verrottbar und ist dadurch ein idealer Bodenverbesserer.
